The first fixture of the Murcia area First Division (Primera Territorial murciana) was to be played in Torrevieja, who asked Orihuela if they could play there instead
'ITV Vega Baja' Orihuela Rugby Club overcame Torrevieja in a game that was very evenly matched in the first half but gradually went more the Oriolanos' way in the second. To some extent, the change of venue requested by the Torrevejenses as they had problems making a pitch available benefited their rivals, who got to start the season at home. Next week Orihuela will play at home again and so get a chance to consolidate their good start.
The game in Desamparados was notable for the equality of the two sides in the first half, when Orihuela scored first but Torrevieja soon equalised. Despite this, at the half time break the home team had a slender advantage of 13-10.
Things changed in the second half and 'ITV Vega Baja' started to act like they were on home turf, playing the ball deeper and showing their superiority to earn their win by 28-13.
During the match, Orihuela managed four tries, of which they only converted one, plus two converted penalties. For their part, Torrevieja converted one try and two penalties.
The next game for Orihuela, the second league tie of the season, will be on Saturday, October 19th at 5pm, also at the pitch in Desamparados, against Albacete
